The Policy covers You and Your financially dependent children or grandchildren, who are all under 21 years of age, who travel with You.

Family Cover
The Policy covers You and Your financially dependent children or grandchildren, who are all under 21 years of age, plus Your spouse, de facto partner of either gender or any adult Travelling Companion named in the Certificate of Insurance, all of who must travel with You.

Policy Holder for all policies

If you are aged under 70 years as at the Departure Date, then the Policy Holder must be between 18 and 69 years of age and needs to be included in the cover as an Insured Person.

If you are aged 70+ years as at the Departure Date, then You must be the Policy Holder and You need to be included in the cover as an Insured Person.

If you have selected either Single or Family cover You are able to cover Your financially dependent children or grandchildren who are all under 21 years of age, who travel with You, the Policy Holder.  The person recorded as the Policy Holder will be the person We deal with in the event of an emergency or any other Policy related matter.

Travellers who cannot be issued a policy online, if accepted, will be advised of the premium payable and terms of cover.

No, the Australia plan is only available if you are travelling solely to Australia. If your travel includes other destinations as well as Australia you should choose the highest plan that includes one of your destinations. Yes, under Chartis Travel Insurance International One-Trip and Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance Policies, the most We will pay for each item is $1,000 and cameras, video cameras, laptop computer equipment and sets of golf clubs are automatically covered up to $3,000
By paying an additional premium You can insure your personal luggage items, pairs or sets of items worth over $1,000 up to a maximum amount of $4,000 per item.
The maximum amount you can specify for all specified items under one policy is $8,000
A set of items is treated as a single item, for example a pair of earrings, a set of golf clubs or a camera and accessories.

Yes, prior to the expiry date of Your original Policy, apply for an extension of Your original Policy by payment of the required premium.
You will be required to confirm Your travel arrangements at the time and We will review this information and Your claims history before we decide on Your application for extended cover. Terms and conditions may apply or We may decide not to offer an extension.
The duration of cover, calculated from the departure date on Your original Certificate of Insurance, must not exceed a period of 42 days in total under the Australia Plan, or 12 months in total under any other One Trip International or Domestic Plan.

Annual Multi-Trip International

Please note, if you have an Annual Multi-trip Plan, you cannot extend Your Trip beyond 45 days.
It is also important You understand that acceptances for Existing Health Disorders cannot be extended beyond the original expiry date as shown on Your original Certificate of Insurance.

If you are aged 70+ years at the Departure Date;

Unfortunately, no extensions of cover are available under either the Mature Age Domestic or International Policies.

This policy will not cover any loss, damage or legal liability arising directly or indirectly from Travel in, to, or through Afghanistan, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Sudan, or Syria.

Where there is a lengthy period of time between applying for cover and your proposed departure date for travel, our medical assessor may advise at the time of assessment that further assessment is required prior to departure. Initially you may only be covered under the cancellation section of the policy subject to a further assessment prior to departure. Our medical assessor will inform you of any requirements and the timing of any subsequent assessment.

You also have an ongoing duty once Your policy is issued to disclose to Us new conditions as well as deterioration in existing conditions, even if we have accepted cover for the condition. If upon such declaration We decide to restrict cover, then these restrictions will only apply to the policy from Your departure date and will not relate to the pre-departure cancellation cover provided under the policy.

No, Chartis Travel Insurance is not available for people moving overseas to live, or for any other one-way journey. For more information on eligibility for Chartis Travel Insurance please refer to Question 1 above.

If you have a New Zealand issued Chartis Travel Insurance policy and intend to return to New Zealand on completion of your travel, and you are either a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident then you will be eligible for cover under an Chartis Travel Insurance policy.

If you do not hold a ticket for your return journey at the time of claim, We will deduct from any claim for repatriation you may have the cost of the fare between your last intended place of departure and New Zealand at the same cabin class as your initial departure fare. You are only covered for expenses in addition to those that you have budgeted for.

Other than hiking, No, under the general exclusions you are not covered for mountaineering or rock climbing using ropes or climbing equipment.

Generally it is an activity that exposes you to danger or increased likelihood of injury, and includes activities where the risk is similar to those mentioned in the policy exclusions.

Specific excluded events are:

Hunting, racing other than on foot, playing polo, professional sport, mountaineering or rock climbing using ropes or climbing equipment (other than hiking), pot holing, or travelling in international waters in a private sail vessel or privately registered sail vessel.

Parachuting, BASE jumping, sky diving or travel in any other air supported device other than as a passenger in a licensed passenger aircraft operated by an airline or charter company. This does not apply to hot air ballooning or parasailing.

Diving underwater using an artificial breathing apparatus unless You hold an open water diving licence or You were diving under licensed instruction.

Bungee jumping and white water rafting (grades 4 and less) are covered by Chartis Travel Insurance polices, provided these activities are conducted by a licensed commercial operator. Black water and grade 5/6 white water rafting are considered hazardous activities and as such would not be covered by an Chartis Travel Insurance policy.

Always check before you go that the operators are experienced, have good equipment and take safety seriously.

You are covered for overnight travel on cruises and ferries. However, ocean yachting is excluded under the General Exclusions. Overnight boating or sailing may be considered to fall within this category of risk in some situations and therefore may be excluded. If you are unsure please call our contact centre to determine whether your proposed activity will be covered before you travel.

If You make a claim You may be required to pay an excess. An excess is an agreed amount that is subtracted from a claim.

The nature of the excess and when it applies is described in the Policy Wording under 'Important matters about Your policy'.

Yes, if You:

• Cancel before Your travel commences and within 14 days of purchase;

• Have not made any claim; and

• Do not intend to make a claim under your policy.

You may cancel your policy by contacting Chartis Customer Service on 0800 787 366.

We will refund your premium in full, less any non-refundable Existing Health Disorder acceptance premium (where applicable).

If You cancel your policy and obtain a premium refund it will be as though Your policy had never existed.

If You cancel Your policy outside the 14 days cooling off period or after travel commences You will not be entitled to a refund of premium.
